I grew up in this part of Florida, the sad thing it is the rule not the exception:

So I have to say, they want to leap headlong back into the dark ages? Fine, but we should do it properly. Round up all the creationists and likeminded religious flakes, wall off Florida and make sure they have NOTHING that is not mentioned in the bible. No electricity, no phones, no lights no motors cars... as primitive as can be. I'm tired of them trying to have it both ways though one good cholera epidemic might do the lot of them in. Florida would be a great spot to do it since most of them live there already.

Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 3:53 PMI'm thinking L.A.
Then have a T.V. reality show, putting Americas prison population in there and let them try to escape, if they get crusified they loose. -

Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 4:33 PMWhile I like the idea, there just aren't enough sociopathic criminals to handle all of the religious nuts. On the other hand, I am all for the idea of simply keeping both groups penned in the same place. -

Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 3:23 AMI like that idea - decriminalize cannabis and criminalize religion. It would necessitate a major swell in the prison development industry - and for once I'd feel very cheery about it.

Yeah, awesome idea. Take a place in the U.S. that isn't influenced by religion at all, and fill it with religious nuts. Sheer idiocy.

Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 6:43 PMWhile we are at it we should also isolate the "PoMo" religious too...get not only the bible thumpers but the Karma-Gaia-Astrological-Spirituality set..ANYONE who uses irrational fantasy to impose false order on the unknowable infinite, like ignorant monkeys throwing rocks at the moon. -

Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 10:26 AMDepends on why they are veggies....religious moral or scientific health. After all, if we start rounding them up for medical choices, we should also get non-smokers, joggers, pilates users, and athletes. -

Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 12:45 PMI think it would be easier, rather than making one huge list of all the various cranks and unredeemable nutjobs. Basically anybody who is totally into their irrational fantasy world and wants to foist their delusions upon others. -

It's not just religious nuts that want to foist delusions.......The religious people want to dictate your behavior by scaring you with stories of hellfire and damnation. These are easily ignored. The non religious nuts want to dictate your behavior through legislation...not so easily ignored:

Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 4:04 PMPushing your irrational beliefs on people, regardless of the methodology is just inherently wrong. One of the classic common threads, be it religious or otherwise, is that the people pushing their ideology exempt themselves from the code of behavior they are trying to force others to live by. "Some are more equal than others...." -

Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 4:26 PM"Some are more equal than others...."
That's from Animal Farm, right? Wasn't Orwell talking about communism, specifically? In this country the constitution protects us from overzealous Christians, even if they comprise the majority. There was nothing in place to protect people from a violent minority in communist Russia. I just don't see how these things are comparable.....
"Pushing your irrational beliefs on people, regardless of the methodology is just inherently wrong."
It might be wrong, but I'd rather have some born again crazy tell me I'm going to hell than some fascist crazy send me to the gulag. You can always tell the Christian to go fuck himself....... -

That might work with a Christian in most parts of the industrial world in this century. Try that with a Christian in any century prior to the 19th. Or more relevant to the modern time, try that with a Muslim outside of the United States. The modern world is a oasis in the otherwise harsh dessert of irrational fascists. That they pray to a god or worship some other looney ideology makes little difference. Once they gain a degree of power it immediately goes from guilting you into doing as they say, to putting a gun to your head. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 5:11 PM"Once they gain a degree of power "
It is argued by some that the U.S. IS a theocracy, that the religious DO have all the power over the nonreligious. There are few (I can think of only one) elected members of the government that are openly atheist. Is anybody putting guns to our head and forcing us to go to church on Sunday? Do atheists suffer because they are underrepresented? I certainly don't suffer. I really don't care if our money says "In God We Trust", or that L.A. is named for the angels. That kind of stuff makes no difference in our day to day lives....and it seems that is the kind of stuff that most atheist complain about (the ones I know, anyway). -
-
Re: Let's isolate the religious nuts
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 5:42 PMWell as I understand some of the recent surveys, a Muslim has a far better chance of being elected than an atheist. This is actually rather striking considering that most of the founding fathers were borderline atheists. Quite a shift in little more than two centuries, especially when you consider that most of that shift has been in the last half century. This is a kind of cultural equivalent of global warming, that since the changes aren't so striking and rapid, the incremental changes being subtle enough that we are the proverbial atheist frogs in the oil slowly driven up to a boil. -

You're a glass half empty kinda guy, aren't ya?
"Quite a shift in little more than two centuries, especially when you consider that most of that shift has been in the last half century."
Far worse things have happened in the last half century, namely the so called war against drugs and the militarization of our police forces.
"most of the founding fathers were borderline atheists. "
Hmmm. I would say they were all deists, even if some of them weren't very religious. Benny Franklin himself was a notorious whore monger. -

Hell, that was light in todays points of view when compared to what the other Founding Fathers did...
